都市木造を支えるのは、木造と高層、多層の建築技術です。1/40の建築模型を使って歴史的な高層、多層木造建築から未来の都市木造までを時代に沿って俯瞰してみます。伝統木造、NPO法人team Timberizeが手がけた黎明期の都市木造、そして日本橋で計画中の高さ80mを超える超高層木造の規模を実感して、2040年の都市木造の街並みを想像してみてください。

大手町・丸の内・有楽町・八重洲の5つの会場で開催する企画展「TOKYO WOOD TOWN 2040 山と木と東京」は、山と都市をつなぎ循環をもたらすデザインを通じて、2040年の東京を「WOOD TOWN」に変えていく方策を展望します。各会場で紹介するデザイン・アート・建築・都市開発の営みの中に、2040年の東京を心地よく創造力にあふれた「木の都市」にする技術やアイデアを探ります。

Past and Future of Japanese Timber Construction Technology and Wooden High-rise Buildings

"TOKYO WOOD TOWN 2040" is to envision measures to transform Tokyo into a "WOOD TOWN" through designs that create connection and circulation between forests and cities. The exhibition unfolds in five venues in Otemachi, Marunouchi, Yurakucho and Yaesu areas and explore technologies and ideas necessary to transform Tokyo into a comfortable and creative "WOOD TOWN" in the practices of design, art, architecture, and urban development.

Cities usually need buildings that are multistoried and tall to maximize the use of expensive lands. Wooden architectures have not been popular in urban area so far due to the lack of structural and fire-resistant technologies required for multistoried, high-rise buildings.
While there are five-story pagodas and other tall constructions built with traditional Japanese wooden architecture technique, multistory architecture is rare.
Amendments made on the Building Standards Act in 2000 legally enabled multi-story wooden construction, but it did not immediately prompt multi-story wooden buildings to pop up. Presently, the pursuit to realize high-rise wooden buildings through accumulation of technical development is in progress.
Here, have an overview of changes and developments in scale, ranging from the earliest Metropolitan Timber Architecture constructed by Team Timberize, a nonprofit organization, to the ultra-high wooden building reaching over 80 meters being planned in Nihonbashi. Then, imagine a future Tokyo cityscape lined with Metropolitan Timber Architecture.
